Attic systems get overlooked more than most, mostly because nobody’s up there looking at them day to day. This Hewitt homeowner scheduled a routine cleaning, and once we got up into the space, it was clear the system hadn’t seen attention in a long time.
The plenum box was coated in a thick, matted layer of dust, the kind that builds up in fibers rather than sitting flat, and clings instead of just resting on the surface. Every duct collar coming off the plenum had the same buildup ringing the opening, and the flex duct runs behind them were coated well past the first foot or two.
We worked through the plenum box, cleaned out each collar, cleaned the duct runs, and finished with a full sanitizing pass since attic spaces like this one tend to trap heat and moisture, which isn’t a great combination with years of built-up dust.
