This was a standard maintenance visit, no complaints, no specific problem, just a homeowner keeping up with the system before it became one.

The house had a mix of vent styles, and dust had settled into every one of them differently. The ceiling diffusers were coated with a dark, streaky film across the fins, heavier where the metal met the wall. Down at floor level, the older wood-cased vents told a similar story but with more texture to it, one had rust colored specks scattered across the metal liner, and another had a thick mat of dust and debris pressed into the bottom corner. Inside the distribution box, the duct collars were caked with a dense buildup that had hardened along the ridges of the flexible ductwork, dark enough that the ribbing underneath was barely visible.

We worked through the system vent by vent, then moved into the distribution box to clean each collar and clear the ductwork behind them. The ceiling diffusers came apart for a full wipe down, fins included, and the floor vents got cleared out down to the bare liner.

Everything that came off the diffusers and vents had built up gradually over time. Once it was gone, the fins and liners looked new again, and the collars inside the distribution box were clear enough to see the duct material instead of just buildup.
